The World Is Flat And The Air is Refreshingly Clean

Mama gnome woke up with a start and sat bolt upright.

She dreamt she'd fallen off the edge of planet Earth.

In her dream whilst she was freefalling through open space, Mama gnome was surprised to find the air off the edge of the planet was actually super darn nifty clean.

"Now how about that?" Mama gnome muttered while she rubbed her eyes and placed her pointy hat on her head.

She got up, slipped on her dragon slippers and trudged to the kitchen to drink a cup of her morning elixir so vital for existence.

Mama gnome drank from her mug and perused the news for green issues, a daily ritual for Mama gnome.

She spluttered and coughed when she read this post by Brad Johnson.

Mama gnome's dream wasn't a dream. It was a nightmare.

And her nightmare had come true.

Democratic Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, is cosponsoring legislation introduced by Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to block the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

And these Senators are not alone.
"Three Democrats (Landrieu, Lincoln, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska) joined every Republican except for Collins & Snowe of Maine, DeMint (SC), and Ensign (NV) in co-sponsoring the resolution, which would overturn the Supreme Court-mandated and science-based endangerment finding for greenhouse gases."

Planet earth must be deflated flat for there is no other logical explanation why these people would oppose the United States Clean Air Act and propose Senate Joint Resolution 26, also called the "Dirty Air Act" by environmentalists.

And as Mama gnome likes to call it the Dirty Trick Act and off blog she would like to call it... something else.

Mama gnome urges you to oppose the Dirty Air Act.

What are the repercussions if the Clean Air Act was effectively opposed by legislation?

Well the world might as well be flat for it seems our logic and reasoning has gone backwards.

For all US greenhouse emitting monstrous corporations that burn oil, burn coal, burn fossil fuels and burn whatever else that emits greenhouse, global warming, air polluting-rooting-tooting-burn-your-lungs stuff...these companies would just have a giant party at our expense for they can just kiss emission capping, greenhouse regulation stuff goodbye.

Goodbye Clean Air.

Hello Dirty Air.

Please contact your senators and tell them you oppose Senate Joint Resolution 26, aka Dirty Air Act.

We don't have barriers limiting air to the United States, air to France, air to China.

Air permeates all over planet Earth.

Help stop the Dirty Air Act.

Help planet Earth keep whatever clean air she has left, whatever decency she has left.

Tell your Senators, "Wake up! Planet Earth is not flat!" and Go Green!

"How do I love thee? Let me count the trees."

"How do I love thee? Let me count the trees..."

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Ten trees, honey. Is that okay?"

"Yes, and you'd better not divorce me, 'cause then I'd want fifty."

In one of the most romantic and moving stories, Mama gnome has ever read, people are asked to plant ten trees in order to get married.

How romantic is that? Get married and plant trees at the same time?

In the Javanese province of Garut in Indonesia, couples are asked to plant ten trees to get their marriage license.

And if they divorce, they need to plant fifty trees.

Indonesia is the third largest producer of green house emissions after China and the United States. This is due to massive deforestation in the country due to overfarming.

The act of deforestation itself releases carbon dioxide and with the the trees gone, carbon dioxide is less absorbed and thus more emissions are released.

According to this CNN report,
Forestry officials have identified "critical land" in Garut, which has been overfarmed and needs to be reforested. The overfarming leads to erosion, which can cause major flooding.

Environmental officials estimate that 50 million trees are needed in Garut alone to reverse the harm done by overfarming.
Fifty million trees! How much will that cost? So they came up with a brilliant plan to ask couples to plant trees.

Can you imagine if they did that everywhere?

Las Vegas would be a forest and not a desert.

Mama gnome says, "Ka-ching! Jackpot."

Anybody planning a destination wedding? I hear Garut, Indonesia is very romantic.

Go green.

Earth Warming 101

By the by, Daddy gnome settled the gnomelets into bed. He opened the gnomelets' favorite bedtime story book, Fairy Tales.

But before Daddy gnome could start, a gnomelet asks, "Daddy, what is earth warming?"

Mama gnome took over and said...

Once upon a time, there was a planet called Earth.

Earth was different from other planets that looped around the Sun. All sorts of creatures and humans lived on this special planet.

But through the years, the humans became industrialized...building giant factories, cars, massive farms and power plants.

Most of the things man made relied on fossil fuels. They burned off fuels and released gases including carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere.

They're called greenhouse gases because they act like a greenhouse with Earth the figurative plant housed underneath its dome.

Greenhouse gases mainly trap the sun's radiation in the atmosphere. Thus causing earth warming or as humans call it Global Warming.

According to a National Geographic News article:

"The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850."

"Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss."

"Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting—for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910."

Mama gnome said, "Come out from underneath the blanket, sweetie. I know it's scary. But let's finish the story---"

Some humans and gnomes tried to help Earth. But they are not enough to offset the effects of countless factories, machines, power plants...and more than six billion people.

Mama gnome wishes she could say, "And they lived happily ever after."

Then I would start over. And I will tell you,

Once upon a time, there was this beautiful planet. She was called EARTH.
